Unionisation in EAP
Event date: Friday, 3rd November Time: 14:00 - 15:30 (GMT+1) Following our "Unethical Practices in EAP" event at this year’s BALEAP conference, we noticed that the topic of unionisation sparked significant interest and discussion. In response, the EAP for Social Justice Special Interest Group (SIG) is delighted to invite you to a dedicated event to explore this important topic further. Our event aims to provide a platform for an open discussion on the challenges and benefits of unionisation in the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). We hope it can be an opportunity to share experiences and exchange ideas within our EAP community. Event Highlights: · Speaker 1: Why may EAP professionals hesitate to join unions? – Iwona Winiarska-Pringle, UCU member and EAP tutor (University of Glasgow, UK) · Speaker 2: An overview of the precarious nature of EAP in Canada and unionization as a form of resistance against neoliberal (mis)management - James Corcoran Assistant Professor, ESL & Applied Linguistics, Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (York University, Canada) · Speaker 3: Freire's critical pedagogy and its relevance to EAP unionisation - Wil Hardman, Liverpool UCU Branch Chair, EAP teacher (University of Liverpool, UK) · Speaker 4: Some personal experiences from inside a Union branch – Neil Allison, UCU case worker and former committee member, EAP teacher (University of Glasgow) We have also extended invitations to representatives from other Higher Education and English Language Teaching unions, in the hope of creating a space for diverse experiences and international perspectives. Our event is designed to encourage group discussions, and your active participation is highly encouraged. Add your voice to the debate – post on the event’s Padlet – all contributions are anonymous. |
