I am an EAP/ESOL practitioner at the University of Leicester and have been heavily involved in developing its University of Sanctuary initiative, particularly by widening participation to HE for asylum seekers and refugees through trauma-informed English language provision. Iwona Winiarska-Pringle Co-convener and Events Officer
I am an EAP Practitioner at the University of Glasgow where I have been teaching on a range of in-sessional and pre-sessional courses since 2013. I have a Masters degree in TESOL and Translation from the University of Warsaw and a postgraduate diploma in Information Governance from Univeristy of Bath. In 2017 I was awarded Higher Education Fellowship. My particular areas of interest are: student engagement, educational mobility, curriculum for sustainable learning and development, educational dialogue and oracy. I am a Teaching Fellow in TESOL and Language Education at The University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. I am passionate about ethical and comprehensive internationalisation of HE including decolonisation of curriculum, I care about representation in ELT and I am interested in the implications of EMI. Dr Weronika Fernando Research Officer
I am an Applied Linguist working at the intersection of Education, Linguistics and Social Anthropology. In my current role, I oversee the Insessional Programme at QMUL and convene MA modules in Teaching English in Professional and Academic Settings and in Languages for Specific Purposes. I also supervise MA and PhD students in Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching. In my work I am passionate about promoting inclusive approaches to curriculum design and pedagogy. I am particularly interested in challenging the deficit framing of language and literacy in HE.
Lorraine Mighty Co-convener and Treasurer
I am now a People and Organisational Development Consultant, but I was an EAP practitioner and programme manager at the University of Birmingham for many years. My research interests include the internationalisation of higher education; staff and students’ experiences of higher education and critical and inclusive pedagogy. My lived experience and keen interest in the equality and belonging agenda has led to my involvement in a number of institution-wide initiatives focused on social justice issues. This includes serving on the committee of the university’s Race Equality Network.
Fiona Price Ordinary Member
I am a Language Development tutor at the University of the Arts London. I teach on presessional and insessional courses. I have an MA in Educational Technology & TESOL and an MA in TEAP. I am interested in exploring inclusive teaching practices and how academic literacies and the challenges of providing insessional support can be framed through the lens of social justice.
Alexander Black Ordinary Member
Alex has worked as a language teacher in the public sector for two decades. He is interested in the impact of EAP in Global South contexts: he is currently working on a case study of washback from assessment practices in public universities in Oaxaca (Mexico). Alex is committed to participatory and creative research methods with accessible outputs. He is currently a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Education (UCL).
William Hardman Secretary
Wil works at University of Liverpool as an in-sessional EAP tutor. His day-to-day work involves working with students to help them gain a deeper and more critical understanding of language requirements and academic conventions in their disciplines. His scholarship interests are mainly focused on speaking in a university context, including aspects such as examining discriminatory language practices and policies, exploring accent and identity, and promoting dialogic and inclusive approaches to learning.
Damon Young Ordinary Member
I am a UG and PGT EAP Teacher and master's supervisor with a proven record of helping students progress, providing positive learning experiences. Widely experienced with supporting students’ academic and presentation skills utilising technology in the classroom. I am also a University of Strathclyde Ed.D student focusing my research on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in HE.
Paul Breen Ordinary Member
Paul Breen is a Senior Lecturer and Digital Learning Developer with UCL's Academic Communication Centre. He has had a lifelong passion for language, politics and social justice. His book publications include Developing Educators for the Digital Age - a story of EAP teachers and technologies - and a forthcoming Bloomsbury edition titled Social Justice in EAP and ELT contexts. He is also involved in various EDI projects and community initiatives outside of education.
